No idea if this is anything more than just a one-off for testing, but if they brought this to the States alongside the Alltrack that would be pretty sweet.

Do not dingle-dangle these fancy jingle-jangles in front of my eye holes, only to have it disappear in a *fwoosh* of “the US market will not support this vehicle” manufacturer fuckery.

Can you even imagine the sheer Touring- vagen glory of this thing with all the existing Golf R aftermarket tuning that’s available?

In all honesty I hope they don’t bring this to the US. If they do, it will mean that I’ll be shelling out over 40k for a replacement to my STI, and I really don’t want to do that.

The Golf R Variant is a thing already, at least in Europe and some other markets, so I’m guessing this might just a slight facelift, or maybe a slight boost in power.
Besides the camouflaged front and rear, I don’t see any large differences.

They did reveal it in LA in 2014, so you would expect them to bring it to the US at some point, right? They are way too expensive over here in Europe anyway.(€54k here in the Netherlands, €43k in Germany, slightly too much for a Golf in my opinion)

Of course it won’t be sold here, because the only wagons allowed to be sold in MURRICA must have raised suspensions, gray plastic body cladding, and vaguely trucky tires.

Same feeling here with the regular hatchback Golf R, and it starting almost $14,000USD over the GTI’s base price in the U.S.
That’s a huge leap for a vehicle that most buyers see as being 90-95% the same as a GTI. If the difference was even half as much...

Give them that 290hp/280lb-ft and I figure we could find a way to live with such a Rally -vagen, lol.

Personally I liked it more when the top Golf model had a VR6, it just made it more special compared to the 4 cylinder GTI. Unlike the mk6 and 7 R, which use the same engine as the GTI, while upping the boost and giving it a FWD based 4wd system. Don’t get me wrong, I like it’s perfomance, and I get why 4wd makes the power easier to handle, but I don’t think it fully justifies the price.

the exception there is Mercedes, who bring all sorts of twin turbo AWD wagony goodness.

The entire reason the VR6 was ditched were the poor sales because the R32 was signficantly heavier, much more expensive and not any quicker than a MKV GTI.
The R32 also had the same “FWD based 4WD system” as the Golf R (which works very well I will add) so that point is moot.
The Golf R is what, $5k more than a GTI Autobahn? Well worth the price. It’s a damn impressive all around car.

TOTALLY agreed. It’s just not that much more special.
I had a MkIII VR6, loved that 12V motor. ( see my profile pic, lol ) Was rather disappointed when they chose to abandon the six-cylinder for a turbo-four, but I understood the emissions/R&D reasoning.
The rest of the car was okay for the mid/late-nineties, but I ran that motor to almost 200,000mi on the original clutch and timing chains even with a pretty good amount of trackdays.
In my dreams of winning the lottery instead of getting some exotic sportscar I find a clean MkIII VR6, have HPA Motorsports convert it to AWD, and put in a low-stressed 3.2L normally-aspirated motor with a light er weight flywheel and valvetrain just so I can drive around and listen to that sound ...

The Golf R has the same equipment level as a $34k GTI Autobahn and then some.
I test drove GTI vs Golf R when I was looking at MK6's and the Golf R was a no brainer for me. It’s a staggeringly good all-around car, and the new one is even better.
ALL cars are getting more expensive. $30k Civics, $75k Mustangs, etc. The Golf still offers crazy good value through out the range. Including the R.
I’m seriously tempted to get another Golf R after I sell back the TDI. But 997's are calling to me..

I just can’t imagine ticking enough boxes on a GTI to reach $34k in the first place.
And yes, new cars ARE insanely expen$ive. I shudder to think that we live in a world with $70k Ford F-150s, but we do. Buying used looks more attractive all the time...

There’s nothing wrong with being based on a Golf chassis anyway. MQB is one hell of a platform.
for $39k it’s super practical, comfortable, has really impressive and fun handling abilities, great steering, hits 60 in the mid 4's, can handle any weather condition, damn good looking, luxurious, safe, and it gets 30mpg highway. That’s a bargain.

Maybe I let myself go a bit too much. My 4wd argument was a pit crappy, I agree.
For that price difference I would get the R over the GTI, but the difference here in the Netherlands around €15k when comparing the base prices, which is a bit much.

Man, I just looked at the E63 wagon and it starts at $104k. Jeebus. Of course once the W213 version with the fancy schmancy new-style interior comes around I’m sure we’ll be able to get the W212 at CarMax for crazy low low prices. I can hope, at least.

I’m willing to forego a manual gearbox for an E63 S 4Matic wagon.

Is it bad that I have heard the term “Golf Variant” many, many times before and only just realized that “Variant” is the European name for the wagon?

I think Variant is more of a Germanic thing than a Euro thing.
Brits would call it an Estate, right?
And that was pre -Brexit.
Besides, I’m from Texas. What the hell would I know... (lol)
